EXCLUSIVE: Moroccan ex-Guantánamo Detainee Mohammed Mizouz Identified In Syria

By Aymenn Jawad Al-Tamimi

So far I have identified two ex-Guantánamo detainees of Moroccan origin fighting in Syria under the banner of Harakat Sham al-Islam: namely, Abu Hamza al-Maghrebi (Mohammed al-‘Alami) and Abu Ahmad al-Muhajir (Ibrahim bin Shakaran). The latter is the leader of Harakat Sham al-Islam: a Moroccan-led mujahideen group operating primarily in Latakia and Aleppo governorates. The group recently played a role in the capture of al-Kindi hospital from regime forces alongside Jabhat al-Nusra and the Islamic Front.

Figure 1: Ibrahim bin Shakaran engages in outreach to children in Latakia village of Kafr Najah.

Now I have identified another Moroccan ex-Guantanamo detainee: Mohammed Mizouz, going under the alias of Abu al-Izz al-Muhajir. He appeared only many hours ago in a video where he makes a speech on the necessity for the unity of the mujahideen, appearing alongside fighters from both Islamic State of Iraq and ash-Sham and Jabhat al-Nusra in Latakia.
IzzMuhajir
Figure 2: Screenshot of video of Abu al-Izz al-Muhajir’s speech. He is in the center under the Harakat Sham al-Islam flag with the Qur’an directly in front of him.

Besides being informed of the identity of Abu al-Izz al-Muhajir with Mohammed Mizouz by a Moroccan jihadi supporter, one should also note that we have other attestations to his appearance. Indeed, the identity is unmistakable.

You can read more about Mohammed Mizouz here. Originally from Casablanca, he was transferred to Morocco after being released from Guantánamo on no charges.

Yet another article highlighting Al-Qaeda, meanwhile a Syrian Palestinian activists has been tortured to death in Assad’s dungeon…

Today Hassan was murdered, murdered by those who pretended to work for the liberation of his occupied homeland “Palestine”, killed by the so-called regime of resistance and anti-imperialism, the 14 security branches of Bashar Al Assad killed him and more accurately, “the military intelligence branch” after arresting him in early October 2013 when he was attempting to leave the camp with his wife, who was released several days after her arrest.

He couldn’t stand this insanity; he was obsessed with finding out new ways to let this energy out of him. So Hassan founded the group “The Palestinian Assembly for Creativity: reaction” with his friends as a reaction to all the mess around him and his world, the camp!

Washington has suddenly gone from backing a mostly Sunni ‘rebellion’ in Syria to reaching out to Iran. This about-turn stems from the realization that the US has dangerously overplayed its geopolitical game and allowed religious militancy to swell past the point of no return. Neither Washington nor its NATO partners can reverse this trend unaided. Both failed miserably in the decade-long, superficial “war on terror,” which, if anything, helped sow further seeds of extremism.

It is clear that the Israeli-Saudi coordination is not limited to the battlefield. According to the experts, this is being developed on the political front as well. Furthermore, after concluding of the Geneva Agreement on the November 24 of this year, after negotiations inthe format of “five plus one” and Iran on the parameters of the Iranian nuclear activities during the transition period, the Israeli-Saudi coordination, according to experts, has acquired another dimension. It has ceased to take into account, it seems, to the fullest exten tthe interests of its American“boss”. Washington now desperately needs a break to restart its economy, to reset its military and political machine for the confrontation with Beijing, quickly growing in strength. However, for this manoeuver, it is necessary to get out ofthe Middle East swamp, where, admittedly, the U.S. has become bogged down through its own fault.

It seems that Tel Aviv and Riyadh are in no hurry to give the US a helping hand. Israel is strongly inhibiting Israeli-Palestinian negotiations, launched in August of this year and sponsored by the United States – thus preventing the attainment of a mutually acceptable peace agreement with the Palestinians. While Riyadh, as world media states, continues to form new groups to overthrow the regime of Bashar al-Assad (now called the “Islamic Front”) for allegedly fighting both against the Syrian regime and Al- Qaeda. This naturally weakens the joint efforts of Moscow and Washington aimed at the upcoming conference on Syria in Montreux, which should start on January 22, 2014. In parallel, Israel and KSA seem to be using all their considerable lobbying power to torpedo the possibility of an agreement on the final settlement of the Iranian nuclear programme through the Europeans(primarily the French), as well as their friends in the U.S. Congress. These efforts are already affecting the toughening of the positions of Washington and the Europeans in the negotiations with the Iranians, which is leading to a sharp reaction fromTehran.

In September of this year, Washington had the courage toresist the pressure of its Middle Eastern allies, “aimed” at the endless confrontation with Iran, to defend its own national interests, which, incidentally, coincided with the interests of most of the world, and as a result, it saw success in both the Syrian and Iranian directions. Does the White House have this courage now?

Sami,
You are right these barrel bombs actually come from the oil refinery in Homs.
I googled DYI air fuel bomb and found this from brown Moses blog
“Oil barrels are turned into TNT barrels in Homs
————————————————————————
The most important oil refinery in Syria is the one of Homs, capital of the revolution. Dozens of barrels are transferred from this refinery to the provinces in Syria including Tartous Port to export oil. During the revolution the regime turned these barrels into explosive bombs, dropping them on the cities and towns in Syria. The regime transported these big explosive barrels using military aviation. Each one contains 200 kg of TNT explosives. These barrels are dropped, by the regime, on the residential buildings and houses to destroy them completely and turn them to open ground, uninhabitable and impossible to hide in. The barrels explode after being dropped, the fuse ignites when it hits the target. The barrel falls in less than 5 seconds, making a huge bang, and when it hits the target both the target and the surrounding area are completely destroyed due to the large amount of the explosive. In Homs – 5 cases were reported , where 2 barrels were dropped in a single sortie. For protection, it is advisable to run to safe places when hearing helicopters sounds , it takes 5 minutes for the helicopters to fly over the target .”

Syria child soldiers: rebels recruiting teens as young as 12 years old
Rebels fighting to oust Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad have enlisted children to their ranks, a video uploaded to the internet by the Middle EastMedia Research Institute (MEMRI) shows. The video is made up of a collection of videos that have been filmed throughout the past year in various parts of Syria. It shows that even the Western-backed Free Syrian Army, which is considered moderate, has enlisted children. Some of the children speak about “jihad for the sake of Allah.”

Is Assad the biggest recruiting seargant for the revolution and in particular the extremists?

I say yes.

People (incl Jimmy Carter) are talking about Assad staying, rehabilitating him and even proposing the unrealistic suggestion that the opposition should join hands with Assad to fight the extremists.

Assad’s presence and response to the uprising from day one has only pushed syrians to join the struggle and encouraged foreign fighters and extremists to head to Syria after seeing the horror on the TV screens.

What do you think the current horrific barrel bomb onslaught on Aleppo and elsewhere is going to achieve? It’s only gonna provoke the people of the targeted areas to join the fight against Assad and with pictures of the aftermath of these barrel bomb attacks beamed across the region even more foreign fighters and extremists will be caused to join the fight.

Don’t blame the revolution. Assad is the root cause. Like others have said (incl. Tara) the extremists can be dealt with later.

Here is what Berislac posted on Iran Military Forum today alongside several videos of the aftermath of the barrel bomb attacks:

This is after attack of Syrian fighter planes on Wahhabi held districts of Aleppo. The airstrikes are being used on rebel positions according to Wahhabis as revenge for Adra and according to me because Syrian army does not have enough soldiers on the ground. Any way this is one big mess Saudis are enjoying this for sure.

There is something that has been happening to me for the last 2 years. I would like to know if someone experienced the same.

When I call to someone I know in rebel areas which are out of Syriatel coverage (Daraa, Qalamoun, Edlib) and even disconnected by the state, although I know there is no coverage, I keep on trying in the expectation and line could return, normally there is no signal but sometimes it happens that the phone rings and a voice of a woman answer. She speaks asking ¨who calls¨, Ï cannot hear¨, ¨who are you¨. etc. then she smiles, and repeat same kind of sentences. I have tested many times and got to the conclusion that it is a registered system that works automatically.

It has been designed to create confussion among people and to create chaos while letting people stop searching for relatives, beloved and friends in rebel areas.

First times I thought there was a problema with the line but finally I discovered it is a system ideated by the regime.

They not only control Al Qaeda members coming from Chechnia and Afganistan, they also create total chaos and desperation among isolated populations.

President Obama’s empty boast on Syria
By Editorial Board, Published: MONDAY, DECEMBER 23, 7:07 PM ET

“IT WAS astonishing to hear President Obama, in the preamble to his end-of-year news conference last week, cite Syria as one of his foreign policy successes.”

“Mr. President, Syria is in the process of giving up its chemical weapons, as you say. At the same time, it’s been more than two years since you both predicted and demanded the resignation of Syria’s dictator Bashar al-Assad. Yet he has strengthened his position and continues to commit war crimes.

His forces are besieging hundreds of thousands of people, deliberately starving them to death, according to your secretary of state. His helicopters are dropping ‘barrel bombs’ on apartment buildings in Aleppo, bombs ‘typically packed with screws, scrap metal, old car parts, blades and explosives,’ as one activist told the Wall Street Journal. More than 9 million Syrians — better than a third of the country — have been driven from their homes. Is this record consistent with ‘standing up for our interests around the world’?”

Each night I read comments from random westerners who have chosen an arbitrary cause to support, I scratch my head in wonderment of the pure ignorance.

For one, Assad is irrelevant as a person, a large part of the Syrian population simply doesn’t want to be ruled Taleban types. Assad is merely a front for this huge segment of the population.

Random westerners need to understand this quickly, or stay out of business that is not theirs.

Assad may still be managing to survive with the massive assistance of Iran and its militia groups. But he no longer prevails in the country he calls Syria and never will again.

Incidentally, the stinking disaster engineered by the Assad regime now has Shia foreign fighters allegedly outnumbering Sunni foreign fighters in Syria:

Very grim indeed. The best description is that of the DRC in Congo and its long civil war.

It is also clear that the regime is now acting fully as just another warlord and that the infighting is happening in both sides with difficulties between the regime and its supporters.

It is also clear that the war has now reached Lebanon and its Iraqisation is slowly evolving. As the traditional politicians end up unable to provide solutions the radicals take over just as the Mufti of Lebanon was heckled severely at the funeral of the young man killed at the Khashogi mosque and slogans for the election of Assir as Mufti were called in his presence; we have the extremist HA with its militant leader saying that its policies are essential for its existence and that at the expense of Lebanon if need be. Once again destroy the country to save the party; something the Baath did in both Syria and Iraq.

It is high time to stop banning on this blog it has become stale and to change the rules so that posts are not cut and paste but substantive arguments But it is essential to let everyone say whatever they want to say.

This is from The Telegraph:

Al-Qaeda leader held in Lebanon ‘raised funds for anti-Assad militants’:

Muhammad al-Majid, whose Abdullah Azzam Brigades claimed a double suicide attack on the Iranian embassy in Beirut last year, is believed to have been a key fundraiser for militants in Syria.

After over a year of anti-Assad hype, lies, fiction peddled as truth, false flag events, manipulation of facts and photographic evidence, the west has gone suddenly silent on Syria. What is going on, and who or what is the west supporting? Those playing soccer with the heads of their victims?
….
who is responsible for these atrocities and upon what authority do the western powers, together with Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Qatar, intervene? Saddam al-Jamal, dead of the Eastern Front of the Free Syrian Army, has claimed that FSA representatives meet regularly with their peers from Jordan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the USA, along with the Saudi Deputy Defence Minister Salman bin Sultan. Al-Jamal claims that a huge amount of money has been delivered to Syrian opposition forces by Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United States of America.

After reading these lines, perhaps those in charge of these countries should be held responsible for the actions of those they aid, abet, equip and finance

I didn’t write #41.

In any case, the opposition’s/Saudists’s biggest problem in this conflict has been their own hubris and underestimating their enemies (as exemplified by the pompous propaganda by Syrialover and others, that never reflect facts on the ground).

That will be their downfall, no amount of dirty money and badly trained Salafists will change this.

I was reading a Salafi type forum yesterday and saw a lot of criticism and tough questions (theological, ideological etc) thrown at ISIS.

The one or two who tried to argue on behalf of ISIS really struggled.

Today the discussion has continued and it’s not looking good for ISIS.

People have questioned how the hell are they a ‘state’?

Also asking how they can proclaim a state without local consent?

Who gave them authority?

Their torture and killing of a rebel leader has been siezed on and ISIS defenders are struggling to make any defence.

It seems other rebel factions and protests are targeting ISIS and this could be the beginning of the end for them. I hope so anyway. Even heard they destroyed a Sufi shrine the other day.

The latest post on that forum from a user called Layth, who I believe is a moderator or admin says this (his previous comments in the recent discussion were pointing out how one ISIS critic talked most sense):

People are revolting against them. It seems that they have learned nothing from the past ten years, Allahul musta’aan.

A powerful description from al- Quran of people who behave at a lower level than animals when they fail to use the best gift of all : the human mind
in that sense, Wahhabi Islam should be classified as psychosis with violent tendency which makes affected victims a danger to themselves and others, however, Wahhabi psychosis is untreatable.

كما اكد مفوض الحكومة لدى المحكمة العسكرية القاضي صقر صقر ان زعيم عبد الله عزام ماجد الماجد توفي اليوم اثر تدهور حالته الصحية .
clearly, majed knew too much and he had to die.
On a positive note, Barzeh may now be ready to follow Muaddamiyyeh’s steps after rebels agreed to give their weapons in return for amnesty, I hope to hear good news that will give the good people of Barzeh a break in a day or two.

on your question about the SNC’s decision not to attend Geneva2, we need to remember that the SNC was never an independent national body, it is an extension of the MB which has decided to use violence in Syria, Egypt, Libya and other countries, those thugs do not have the word “compromise” in their dictionary.

George Galloway paid £80k for joining ‘pro-Syria’ TV channel

Galloway, who once described President Assad’s regime as “the last bastion of Arab dignity”, has started presenting a fortnightly show, A Free Word, for the Beirut-based broadcaster al-Mayadeen.

According to the Register of Members’ Interests, Galloway will earn £3,000 an episode – or a yearly income of £78,000 – on top of his MP’s salary. The TV station will also cover the cost of regular trips to Lebanon to pre-record the programme.

ISIS is under attack according to multiple sources:

The question is how the Assad regime will respond to calls for a power sharing agreement and an Assad-free Syria when all eyes are on Islamist terrorists and rebels are on the retreat. I think that a large segment of the opposition signed their own political death certificate when they chose to copy the regime’s violent methods and allowed foreign jihadists to desecrate Syria’s hospitable and beautiful land.

Opposition Chaos Escalates in Syria

Syrian opposition groups attacked one another on both the battlefield and social media as a seething animosity that had been building for months burst wide open, further complicating the nearly three-year war to unseat the regime of President Bashar al-Assad. The conflict between rebels like the Islamic Front, a recent coalition of seven rebel groups, and the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), a more hard-line Al Qaeda affiliate, has escalated this week after the torture and death of a rebel Syrian doctor near Aleppo.
And the opposition groups are blaming the ISIS for his death.
